10 Small Space Organization Hacks

If you have a small space, having a place for everything helps keep it clean and organized. Here are some of my favourite small space organization hacks that are functional and beautiful, too!

Use a narrow shoe cupboard in a hallway to organize footwear

One of my favourite inventions is the narrow shoe cabinets from Ikea with the flip-out doors. They store your shoes vertically, so they hardly take up any space at all. These shoe cabinets are a fantastic way to get your footwear up & off the floor to create more floor space. They come in a variety of widths to suit any space. You can shop Ikea’s shoe cabinet options here. We had the Hemnes cabinet in our entry, but now I’m putting a couple of Stall cabinets in our hallway. They’re even narrower!

Create a hook wall in a small entry to hang jackets and bags

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that I love hook walls. We have one in our own back entry, and I’ve created a couple in other homes as well. Hook walls are a wonderful way to create easy storage for families and kids. They work well in a cramped space where a closet doesn’t. Hook walls are a fantastic small space organization solution! Build a pegboard wall in your garage to hang tools

As much as I adore hook walls, I might love pegboard walls even more! An obvious place to install pegboard is in a garage, and you can make it look a little more stylish by framing it. I share exactly how to build a giant framed pegboard and garage storage unit right here.

Build a dining bench out of kitchen cabinets for extra, hidden kitchen storage

Double-duty furniture works really well for small space organization. If you can create extra storage in your seating or side tables, do it! This dining bench was created with Ikea refrigerator cabinets and a DIY cushion. Not only is it comfy for my girls to sit on in our breakfast nook, but it offers storage for a lot of my serving ware and extra kitchen items. Create a command center over a small desk to store office & craft supplies

Another great use for pegboard is as a way to organize things above a desk. You can create a command center for your family by installing a pegboard and hooking baskets, clipboards, shelves, and hooks on it to keep your office and craft supplies organized. Build a window seat with storage with Ikea shelves and baskets

The square Ikea Kallax line paired with baskets is one of my favourite ways to store and organize items. Here I used them in my daughter’s bedroom as storage and a window seat. To recreate something similar, use the long & short bookcase for the seat section, and flank two square-shaped bookcases on either side for extra storage. Create wall storage in a laundry room with a DIY pegboard and hanging hampers

Ready for one last pegboard idea?! This is my favourite one! A large, framed pegboard on a laundry room wall is a great way to store laundry and cleaning supplies! You can pair your pegboard wall with hooks, baskets, and hanging laundry hampers for the ultimate way to keep a small laundry room organized and tidy. Hack an Ikea kitchen cabinet into an entry console and recycling center

IKEA kitchen cabinets don’t just have to be used for kitchens! Along with the kitchen cabinet dining bench and garage storage I’ve created, this mudroom recycling and entry console hack is a favourite! A small kitchen cabinet with four pull-out drawers is a wonderful way to store recycling (or anything, really!). A butcher block top with a hole drilled in it makes a great surface for a charging station and key bowl. See this whole DIY mudroom storage hack here.

Use dollar store cutlery trays to organize small items in shallow vanity or cupboard drawers

Try to think outside the box when it comes to organization items! For example, these shallow trays from the dollar store were meant for desk or cutlery organization, but they can also be used in vanity or cupboard drawers to organize toiletries in a bathroom. Keeping like items corralled into trays is a helpful small space organization hack.

Put a chest of drawers or floating drawers in a closet for clothing storage

Dressers don’t always have to be out of your closet in your bedroom! Try putting them in your closet to create more space in your room, or incorporating floating drawers in your closet system. These ones pictured came with the system I installed for my daughter’s closet, and they’re such an easy, space-saving way to organize and store her clothing!
