5 gorgeous home decor trends for 2022
As someone who loves art and decorating, I always find researching the latest trends in home decor fascinating. It’s interesting to see what’s gaining popularity and why, and to experience the shifts in the industry. Personally, I enjoy switching up my decor now and then, so I often incorporate trends in our home IF I love them, if we can afford them, and if they work for our family. As a general rule, though: you should decorate your home for YOU and YOUR FAMILY regardless of what’s trending. If you love a trend, have fun with it and give it a try! If not, decorate your home in a way that makes YOU happy and comfortable.

Sustainable design choices
I think it’s wonderful that there’s been a movement towards more sustainable, eco-friendly design choices in home decor over the past few years. People are choosing more natural materials like wood, cork, linen and cotton for their home finishes and furnishings. We’re thinking more about how things are produced, and if they’re made ethically.

Thrifting and repurposing furniture is a great way to recycle pieces while creating a unique look in your home. It’s also a good way to think of the environment while saving money.

New luxury
Because most of us haven’t been able to travel a lot over the past couple of years, we want to create a hotel-like feeling at home. I think this is one of the reasons luxurious design choices are trending this year. Dramatic wall colours like black, and luxe finishes like marble and brass can make a room feel more high-end. Generous layers of textiles like throw pillows, rugs, and bedding makes rooms feel more luxurious and comfortable.

Velvets, silks and boucles seem to be popular fabric choices for upholstery and drapes to create that luxury look. For a budget-friendly way to add luxury into your home, make some DIY velvet throw pillows and add them to your living room and bedroom decor!

Green kitchens
I LOVE the colour green because it’s found so often in nature, and looks like it’s THE decor colour of 2022! Specifically, lots of green kitchen designs have been popping up and I think they’re gorgeous. I’ve seen everything from mint green to deep forest green kitchen cabinetry. Lighter greens can create a more retro, vintage feel, while mid-tone and deeper greens are reminiscent of the English countryside (especially with some brass hardware)! This is still a natural colour, but it’s more exciting than the white, grey and black kitchens we’ve seen in the past. I love how the colour green looks mixed with copper, gold, and natural wood tones.

To try this trend in a budget-friendly way, don’t forget about the power of PAINT! I love paint to make a space look completely brand new. You could paint all of your kitchen cabinetry like I did here in our RV, or you could try painting smaller home decor accents in a green tone for a more subtle infusion of the colour.

Vintage style (Grandmillenial)
Grandma’s decor is on trend again with the embrace of Grandmillenial style this year! What’s that? It’s mixing more elaborate, vintage pieces into your decor along with old-fashioned fabrics like chintz’s and smaller prints. Antique shopping is gaining speed again (hooray!), and so is the desire to add one-of-a-kind pieces to our decor. I’ve also seen more ornate trim work and lattice walls pop up in homes recently.

To get this look on a budget, search for vintage-style pieces at thrift stores, or mix hand-me-down furniture with more modern pieces in your home. You could also sew smaller accessories like throw pillows in floral fabrics to add the look in smaller doses.

Multifunctional spaces
Because so many of us have had to work and school from home this year, we’ve embraced creating rooms that serve more than one purpose. For example, we’ve added a home office to our dining room or a gym area to our bedroom. Multifunctional spaces aren’t going anywhere as we spend more time at home, and designing these in a clever way will continue to be a huge trend in 2022.

To make this work, think about how you can upcycle or buy furniture pieces that are double-duty like murphy beds, tables with storage, or flip-out desks. Use your creativity to turn a small space like a closet or living room nook into a budget-friendly home office area.

PIN ME:

I love the kitchen with a white tile and mid tone green, with brass hardware. What colour green is that?
This is exactly the article I needed. I just got my cabinets painted white and have been needing to update my decor. At least that’s what my daughter has been telling me 😉 this gave me affordable ways to do that. Thank you!
