Bake Sugar Cookies with Maple Sugar Glaze (A Canada Day Recipe)
I am very proud to be a Canadian girl through and through. I love my country, and I am so blessed to enjoy the freedoms that we can experience here. My brave grandparents left East Germany in WWII to come work in Eastern Canada. They found refuge here, and later they moved west to Alberta to raise their family of 7 children (including my mom, who was born in Lethbridge, Alberta). I was born in Calgary, Alberta and I now live near Edmonton, Alberta.
I’m happy to be raising my precious little girlies in this beautiful country and I’m looking forward to celebrating Canada Day here on Monday with my husband and my daughters.
As part of the festivities, we’re making these cute little maple leaf shaped sugar cookies with yummy Canadian maple syrup glaze. Because what’s more Canadian than maple syrup, right? These are soft, mild and scrumptious and a special treat to serve this Canada Day holiday.

Sugar Cookies with Canadian Maple Syrup Glaze
Yield: About 3 Dozen
Ingredients:
Sugar Cookies (adapted from Better Homes & Gardens)
- 3/4 cup softened butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
Maple Syrup Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tsp (or more) maple syrup
Beat together the butter, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt. Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix until smooth. (I mix all of my baking by hand, but this also works well with a mixer.)
Mix in 2 1/2 cups of flour. Refrigerate the dough for at least an hour.
Roll the dough out to about 1/4″ thickness. Cut maple leaf shapes out of the dough (I found my maple leaf cookie cutter at The Real Canadian Superstore.
Bake each batch of cookies for about 7 minutes at 350 degrees F until they are just slightly golden on the edges.
To make the maple syrup glaze, mix about 3 tablespoons of syrup into 1 cup of icing sugar until you reach a nice, dripping glaze consistency.
You may need to add more syrup. Mix and test the consistency as you go. Drip the glaze over your baked & cooled cookies with a fork.
Happy Canada Day, friends! What do you love about our country?
