Create Your Own Keepsake Necklace
By Cheryl Sheeler
What better way to keep your memories close at heart than by tucking a bit of nostalgia inside a small glass vial and turning it into a charm necklace?! Read on to find out how you can make your very own custom piece.
Supplies:
- Small glass vial
- A bit of nostalgia to put inside your glass vial (let your imagination soar!)
- Your choice of length and finish of chain complete with clasp
- Charms and trinkets if desired to embellish
- Various jump rings to attach charms and trinkets to chain
- Crazy glue
- Small plier set including needle nose, flat nose, round nose and side cutting pliers
Instructions:
~ Be inspired ~
I have always been inspired by nature and dandelions are no exception! The airy seedlings are soft and dramatic and just plain beautiful. This tutorial will cover the steps taken to create a keepsake necklace using dandelion seedlings but feel free to use whatever you’d like! The only limit to what you choose to use is your imagination and the size of your glass vial of course 😉
~ Fill ‘er up ~
Fill the glass vial with however many seedlings you’d like and securely glue the cork back on with a bit of super glue around the sides of the cork. Be sure the glue you use is compatible with glass. My vial conveniently came with a small screw hook to make it easy to attach to necklace. If you don’t have a screw hook you can tie a bit of strong string or cotton cord around the neck of the vial and loop a jump ring through that.
~ Get Creative ~
This is the fun part and can really set your necklace apart from store bought jewelry! Hang the glass vial on your chain choice and embellish with charms and beads if desired. A handmade touch to anything never goes unnoticed!
~ Admire and enjoy ~
Proudly wear your one of a kind keepsake necklace that not only looks beautiful, but most importantly helps you keep your special memory close at heart. My necklace reminds me of the many lazy summer walks I enjoyed with my little ones this past summer.
Here are a few other ideas I have used in some other necklace designs to get your creativity flowing:
Write a message on a small piece of paper, roll it up and tuck it inside the vial. This makes a fantastic personalized gift for someone special!
Your sand from a vacation finds a home among a few beachy trinkets!
Fill with some glitter for a bit of glam and sparkle. Tone down by pairing it with a few vintage style charms.
I hope I’ve inspired you to create something that makes your necklace as unique and original as you are!

I would put green and blue beads in it to represent my twin boys born this past march.
I would put some of my dad’s ashes in it.. it would be a really special way to always have him with me.. I have always been fond of these little jars and of the dandelion seedlings. It makes me think of picking bouquets of these for my mom 🙂
I would put dried rose petals from the rosebush I planted after my dad and mother-in-law died. We recently had to move and were not able to bring the rosebush…I will miss it. the necklace is beautiful! thanks for sharing.
i’ve never thought about making a keepsake necklace before. i love the idea of using dandelions because my son gets so excited about picking them and blowing on them. i would probably go with putting in parts of a piece of jewelry that my father gave me on my 16th birthday. it needs some updating.
I would put some sand from the beach in mine

The dandelions are such a cute idea. My daughter loves them. I think sand from a vacation would be great too.
I would put a dandelion or sand inside mine.
I was recently in a near fatal car crash while 8 1/2 months pregnant. I think I would go back to the site of the accident and but some of the pebbles in the jar. To remind me how lucky my son and I are to have survived! 🙂
I also shared this on facebook and twitter. 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway.
I would put dirt and riverbottom sand (and some gold flakes if I find any) in mine to represent my family’s land that is in the beautiful Athabasca River valley. We plan on keeping the beautiful piece of land for a long time!!!
Shared on Facebook.
I would put feathers in mine because my son is named after an angel and we all know little angels have wings.
Hi! Thanks for the giveaway. I would put cinnamon in mine because my 3 sons and I love every thing with cinnamon.
I will put in a bit of my daughters hair from her first haircut. I have saved a lock in my jewelry box from the last 2 years.
