How to Choose an Accent Chair – Tip Tuesday
I have a chair hoarding problem, and I’m not afraid to admit it. Beautiful accent chairs are one of my decor weaknesses – they’re just so fun to style and play with in all rooms of the house! You can put a pair of accent chairs with a sofa like I did in our guest house to create a symmetrical look. I also still adore this vintage chair pair I found and updated with my mom. Accent chairs with a fun pattern or in a bold colour can add so much personality to any space. But how do you pick out the perfect accent chair for your room? Let me share with you some simple questions to ask yourself when shopping for the perfect chair that you’ll love for a long time.
Something that’s taken me a long time to learn is that it’s really important to first measure your space and choose furniture that both physically fits in the space and is the right scale with the rest of your furniture. Even if you spend a gazillion years picking out the perfect colour and pattern of chair, it won’t look right if it’s too big or too small for your room.
You also need to define your style and look for an accent chair that matches it. In this room, I’m going for a rustic glam vibe (my favourite look!), so the Daphne accent chair from The Brick pictured here was perfect for that look. I’ts curvy and glamourous, but in nice dark fabric that’s not too fussy.
Next, look at your current furniture and decide if you want your accent chair to match it or contrast it. Here, I have a new light grey sectional (which I can’t wait to show you soon!) that I wanted to contrast with a darker accent chair.
It’s also a good idea to think about what you’ll use your chair for and buy something appropriate. If you want a cozy reading chair, look for a soft and cushy club chair. For something that encourages sitting forward and conversing, something a little more formal and upright will work well.
Finally, having a pair of matching chairs is always a great thing to have in your decor asenal. Chair pairs can flank a couch to create a cohesive look, or put them on either side of a small table to make a reading nook.
