How to Make DIY Chalk Finish Paint (Video) | One Room Challenge Week 2
It’s near the end of a busy week, and the progress on our dining room makeover for the One Room Challenge has been sadly very minimal. I’ve been really busy and tired, but I’m hoping next week will be a little less stressful all around so that I can put my nose to the grindstone on this project. The good thing is that I’m almost done the buffet makeover in this space, and I’m excited to share with you a video on how I make my favourite DIY chalk style paint for painting furniture!
In case you missed it, here are my plans to change our formal sitting room into a formal dining room space.
If you haven’t heard of chalk style or chalk finish paint, it’s a thicker style of paint that covers surfaces really well. It sticks to almost anything (even metal!), and it’s great for sanding to achieve a distressed look.
If you want to give your furniture a vintage or country look, this kind of paint is for you!
There are lots of great kinds of chalk style paints on the market, but I also like to make my own. This is a good option if you already have some latex paint on hand to use up, or if you want to create your own custom colour.
All you need to make DIY chalk style paint is some flat latex paint and some Plaster of Paris.
Watch my video below to learn how to make your own DIY chalk finish paint, PLUS get a peek at how our dining room makeover looks so far!
Make sure to follow along here over the next 6 weeks as I work on our new dining room, and visit the One Room Challenge blog to see all of the other makeovers as they progress!
I use the same method to make my own chalk paint too! I just love it and don’t ever see myself being able to spend $40+ on the name brand stuff haha 🙂
Isn’t it the best 🙂
Chalkpaint is my favourite! Thanks for some great tips, Christina! Wishing you a wonderful Easter weekend!
Thank you, Kendra 🙂 Happy Easter to you as well.
Looking forward to seeing your room unfold Christina and will have to try out your chalk paint recipe!
Thank you, Kim.
Such a great tutorial! Wish I would have seen this before I did my latest chalk paint adventure! I am participating in the ORC for the first time this year so it is a bit overwhelming, but I love seeing everyones ideas and designs!
Thank you so much, Holly 🙂
I have to try that sometime, but a good friend of mine is who started FAT paint, so I would feel like a traitor! But I discovered chalk spray paint! Using it in my ORC challenge!
I love FAT paint too, and I definitely recommend it! This is just another good furniture paint option if you want to try using up some latex paint. I’ll have to try some of that chalk spray paint!
I have to try this. I have an old entertainment center that only held a 32″ tv. It’s a piece my dad built for me but have been unable to use. I have dropped the top of it down and made it a tv stand, able to hold our bigger tv.
I do have a question though. How would you go about coloring the chalk paint? I am looking for a burgundy color for a base color.
Hello Kim, what a great project to do :). You can pick the latex paint in any colour you like ?
Do you apply any type of wax over your chalk paint? I’ve never painted with chalk paint so I’m learning. Lol
Christina did you a wax after applying her DIY chalk paint. You can see all the details of how to paint with chalk paint over at this post.
