How to Mix & Match Throw Pillows

Learn some simple tips and tricks on how to choose throw pillows for your furniture and make them look good every time!

I love throw pillows in decor. They’re such an affordable and easy way to completely change the look of a room! I love to change out our pillows seasonally to add different colours and styles into our home without having to spend much money at all.

Ultimately, you should decorate with fabrics and textures that you love, but in case you need a bit of guidance when choosing new throw pillows for your space, here are some easy ways to mix and match them that work every time!

1: Start with a Colour Scheme

Use one pillow that you love as a jumping off point to help choose coordinating pillows for your home. You might be inspired by a beautifully patterned pillow you find at a store, or maybe you’ve found some fabric that you love and you want to DIY your own throw pillow! 2: Use This No-Fail Mix: Organic Pattern + Geometric Pattern + Textured Solid

Large floral patterned pillows (organic pattern) always look sharp with a small plaid pillow (geometric pattern), and those tie in to a solid pillow with a fun trim (textured solid). The combination of an organic pattern, geometric pattern and a textured solid pretty much always works! Find colours from your organic pattern, and carry those into your other pillows and you’ll be winning every time.

3: Vary the Pattern Scale

If you have a large patterned organic floral pillow, it will look great with a pillow with a small-scale plaid. If you have a small-small organic patterned pillow, it might look lovely with a large-scale striped pillow. Contrasting pattern scales work really well together.

4: Use Some Repetition to Tie Everything Together

You can use identical pillows on either corner of your sofa to make your decor feel consistent and tie everything together. Then, don’t worry if all of the other pillows are different!

5: Vary Pillow Size, but Keep Them Generous

Various sizes of throw pillows also look beautiful; they add more texture and interest to your room. I’d caution on going too small, though – I prefer to stay over the 20″ wide mark for my throw pillows to keep them looking substantial against my furniture. Play with rectangular pillows, round pillows, and layering smaller pillows in front of larger ones.
