Make a Mini DIY Fire Bowl

Let’s make a simple, mini DIY fire bowl that’s the perfect accent to your outdoor decor! This little fire bowl helps repel bugs and adds a beautiful ambiance to your tabletop.

When I came across this concrete planter at HomeSense, I knew it would be the perfect container for a mini fire bowl for my patio table!

I love how this DIY fire bowl looks as a patio table centerpiece, and I find that it repels bugs with its heat and flame. It’s so easy to make, too!

How to make a mini DIY fire bowl

Materials:

• round concrete planter
• sand
• gel fuel
• fire glass rocks
• chicken wire

To begin your fire bowl project, fill the bottom of your concrete planter with sand. You’ll want enough sand so that when you set your gel fuel canister on top, the top of the canister is an inch below the top of the planter.

Next, cut some chicken wire to fit just inside the mouth of the planter. 

  

Carefully fold the wire edges of the mesh circle under. Take the lid off a gel fuel canister and put it on top of the sand in the planter. Place the chicken wire circle on top. You’ll want some air flow around the fuel canister.

Finally, arrange some fire glass rocks on top of the chicken wire. I love these green ones!

To light the fire bowl, use a long lighter to ignite the wick of the gel fuel. You can move the glass rocks away from the fuel before lighting, and then carefully move them back over the flame if you wish.

To put the flame out, you can use a candle snuffer. My fire bowl lasted around 6 hours. Though the flame is subtle, it gives off a lovely glow and a little bit of warmth. To replace the fuel, gently lift off the chicken wire and swap out the canisters.
