Make a Summery Flower Crown from Foam Sheets – A Kid’s Craft

We’ve been enjoying our Michaels crafty summer (complete with less screen time and visits to Passport to Imagination craft classes) so far. I can’t believe it’s already August  tomorrow – seriously! We need to soak in as much sun as we can get (which has been tricky in this weird-weather-summer we’ve been having) and continue our quest to play and craft together before playschool starts again for the year.

We grabbed some fun and sparkly foam sheets, pipe cleaners and ribbon from Michaels earlier this week so that we could craft some summery flower crowns today. They were a big hit! I cut the flowers, Little C threaded most of them onto the pipe cleaners, and both girls modeled the crowns gleefully all morning.

Here’s the DIY!

Materials (all from Michaels):

• 3 or 4 craft foam sheets
• a bag of pipe cleaners
• a roll of decorative ribbon

Cut the foam sheets into squares that measure approximately 3″ x 3″, and cut the squares into flower shapes. I free-handed my flowers, but you could also trace a shape with a pencil before cutting. We used a dozen flowers for our crown.

Poke one end of a pipe cleaner through the center of a flower, then back down. My four year old did most of the flowers with some coaching – it was a good beginner’s sewing lesson! Continue threading flowers on in this way until you reach the end of the pipe cleaner. Twist another pipe cleaner on, and then continue attaching flowers.

When you reach the end of the 2nd pipe cleaner, try the crown on to see if it fits. Attach the two pipe cleaners together to form a circle that’s the required size.

Tie on some pieces of ribbon where desired on the crown for added pizazz!

Your little princess is all set to frolic in the fields like a summery, medieval fairy princess.
