Modern Boho Deck Makeover
This month, I had the pleasure of partnering with Brookfield Residential again to complete a fun & challenging DIY & decor project in one of their gorgeous new show homes – the Alma in the Orchards at Ellerslie. With its open floor plan, this duplex would make a great home fit for a person who loves to entertain. We wanted to turn the back deck into a chic place to hang out with friends, so I gave this space a budget-friendly DIY modern boho makeover.
You might remember the under-stairs pantry nook I made at another Brookfield Residential show home. This one was another project that challenged me to create a beautiful and functional space on a budget.
Here’s how the deck & pergola looked before:
And here’s how the space looks now:
The inspiration for this modern boho look came from a Moroccan inspired rug I found on Pinterest. From there, I was able to choose the other pieces and accessories. You can watch my first look at the space & how I started the design plan in the video below:
We wanted this space to incorporate a lot of budget friendly DIY pieces, so I made an outdoor sofa for this deck from 2x4s.
It turned out wonderfully, and I love how it looked in the finished space! You can learn how to make a DIY outdoor sofa yourself by clicking here.
This sisal ottoman is another DIY, and it’s made from an upcycled tire. You can find the tutorial to make that right here. I love how it adds some rustic texture to this look.
The Moroccan inspired floor mat beneath the ottoman is another fun project that I made with a simple Sharpie and painter’s drop cloth. Watch the video below to see how I made it:
When I saw the interior decor of this beautiful show home (have a look at the home & floor plan right here), I noticed that the designers had incorporated a lot of beautiful greens into the space. I knew I had to bring some of that gorgeous colour to the outdoor space, too!
This wall hanging is some faux greenery squares that I attached to the wall of the pergola, and I love how they add some life & colour to this deck without the maintenance required of a real live wall. The bits of purple in this wall hanging inspired me to add some purples to this design with a pillow, a lantern and a faux orchid.
I adore this hanging chair I found! It adds such a fabulous boho touch to this design, and the green palm leaf cushion I put inside it was a discount find at a local building supply store.
At the last minute I added this large outdoor palm leaf rug to the deck (also found at a building supply store), and I think it works well layered under my DIY floor mat for extra pattern and colour. I think it really pulls the design together, and I’m so glad I found it!
The lights are a set of commercial string lights that I hung with small cup hooks from the pergola. I think they add so much ambiance to this outdoor area, and the lanterns decorating the space do too.
