Modern Nautical Kids’ Room: Before & Mood Board

Hooray for kids’ bedrooms! They’re one of my favourite spaces to decorate because they can be so fun and whimsical. I’ve had the pleasure of decorating quite a few little girl’s rooms, but sadly the opportunity to decorate a boy’s room has never crossed my path…  until now! I’m so excited to have the honour of helping one of my best friends give her little boy’s room an exciting makeover. We’re doing it on a budget, in a really short amount of time, and we’re doing to be doing a ton of DIY! Let me share with you the “before” photos and mood board for this modern nautical kids’ room makeover.

Here’s Little K’s room right now. He’s a 6 year old boy who loves the colour orange, lego and trains. He’s ready for a grown-up bed and some more colour in his space.

I love the big window and window seat in his room. I also really like the current wall colour (Heath Gray from BEHR), but I think a feature wall in a contrasting colour will add some life to this space. Little K needs lots of storage, so we sourced the most perfect bed for him that’s jam packed with storage and style. The Driftwood Captains Pier Platform Bed from The Brick has under-bed storage, plus a whole wall of shelves behind it. We loved its modern nautical style, so the bed was the inspiration for the rest of this space. It’s going to be sea worthy, but in a sophisticated and colourful way.

Here’s what we need to do in this room (in a very short period of time):

• clean the shelving and paint it
• install board &  batten on the feature wall
• paint the feature wall (and possibly the window seat nook)
• touch up paint the rest of the room
• install a new light fixture
• assemble and place the new furniture
• create DIY wall art
• shop for accessories from The Brick
