Our Kitchen Makeover with Black Stainless Steel Appliances
We transformed our kitchen for the new year by refinishing our butcher block countertops and installing all new black stainless steel appliances. Come take a tour and see how our eclectic, vintage industrial style kitchen looks now!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! We sure did, and it was so nice to take a little break to relax and be together as a family. One thing we really enjoyed this week? Our newly updated kitchen! We sure spend a lot of time here (especially when all the kids are home on break!), and with some of our appliances over 10 years old and our butcher block countertops in need of refinishing – it was due for an update.
Before Christmas, we were able to take a few days to work hard on our kitchen and give it a makeover. It was the only Christmas present I wanted this year! (You know you’re getting old when all you want for Christmas are new appliances, haha!) I’m SO happy with the result of our work and the beautiful new KitchenAid appliances from The Brick.
Here’s how our kitchen looked before:
And here it is now:
We completely sanded, re-stained and re-sealed all of our countertops, plus we installed a gorgeous set of KitchenAid appliances in black stainless steel. I think our kitchen now looks a little warmer, and a little more modern with the addition of the slightly darker countertops and black stainless steel appliances.
I thought our stained & sealed butcher block countertops had held up quite well despite how much we used them, but they were damaged in some spots. We knew that we’d have to refinish them every few years, so we thought now was a good time! I’ll write a separate blog post on the whole ordeal (it was a LOT more work than we thought!), but for now I’m enjoying the deeper, warmer stain colour and the fresh new finish.
I loved our previous double oven range so much that I decided to get another double oven, but this time in a striking black stainless steel. This one is the KitchenAid Electric Double Oven from The Brick, and it’s been a fantastic appliance so far! I love that I can bake two different dishes at two different temperatures in the ovens, plus it has a burner on the bottom right that heats up extra quickly. It’s wonderful for boiling water for all the pasta my kids eat!
The bottom oven also features the Even-Heat™ true convection system for heat consistency throughout the oven. I’ve baked Christmas sugar cookies, roasted potatoes and chicken wings at the same time, and proofed yeast dough in here and the results have all been perfect so far.
We also got the matching black stainless steel KitchenAid range hood, and I think it instantly makes our kitchen look so much more sleek and modern. I’ve always been a fan of black on white, and I love how the range hood contrasts so well with the light marble backsplash behind it. It features three different fan speeds, but also a really neat auto-sensing fan feature that can sense how much heat is leaving the stove and adjust the power as needed. So cool!
I did something a little different with the dishwasher – I got a black dishwasher rather than a black stainless steel dishwasher so that it blends almost seamlessly into my black cabinets. I’m so happy with the effect; I think it makes this side of the kitchen look so sleek! This KitchenAid dishwasher from The Brick has a tough stainless steel interior that’s perfect for our messy, busy family and it’s really easy to use.
Our new dishwasher has a ProWash™ cycle that can sense the perfect settings it needs for each load of dishes and adjust automatically. We can fit a ton of dishes inside, which is a huge must for our family!
The final appliance we installed to complete our kitchen makeover is my absolute favourite – this KitchenAid Multi-Door Refrigerator. I’ve been eyeing it with all the heart eyes for a while, and I can’t believe it’s now in our kitchen! First off, I’m so happy with how the black stainless steel looks against our white cupboards on this side of the kitchen, and I love the modern industrial look with its square lines and streamlined handles.
I think my whole family can agree that one of our favourite parts of the new fridge is the exterior ice and water dispenser that chills our water to perfection and gives us the option of cubed or crushed ice. We use it hourly!
My personal favourite feature is these two independent storage drawers that I’ve loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables for easy snacking. It’s helping me and the kids reach for healthy snack foods, plus you can change the temperature of the left drawer for different items like deli, drinks and greens.
There is ample storage inside the fridge for all of our family’s needs. There’s even a sliding drawer in the lower main part of the fridge with a herb storage compartment! The doors and drawers all have a soft-closing feature, and the freezer had three different tiers so that we can organize and fit all of our frozen items nicely inside.
I am so very happy with my extra adulty Christmas present this year – an amazing kitchen refresh with smooth counters and shiny new appliances! Our kitchen is truly the heart of our home, and I’m looking forward to cooking many more meals here for my family… and even letting them cook some for me!
The slightly darker tones of the black stainless steel appliances and warmly stained counters gives our kitchen a fresh, new look that I love. Special thanks to The Brick for helping us create a functional and beautiful kitchen that we will enjoy for years to come!
Now tell me: Have you ever considered black stainless steel appliances? What’s your favourite kitchen appliance and why?
Would love the details on the stain used for the countertops!
Here’s how Christina did her countertops ?

Ok! She mentioned in this post that she refinished them so I thought it was a different stain than her previous post.

Loving your kitchen makeover.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
Choosing the right design for a kitchen is very important to match the theme of the house. Really a good way to start renovating a kitchen.
Awesome kitchen!!! From the before pics, the cabinets look whiter than the after pics? Did you repaint the cabinets?
Hi Jessica! I think it is just the lighting because the floor looks different too – LOL!
Can you tell me what color the bottom and top cabinets are? Are they painted?
I agree! The kitchen should be the most comfortable for the hostess. So I would spare no money for e reconstruction☺
Amazing article, I completely agree with your thoughts that black stainless steel appliances make your kitchen looks beautiful.

Hi Stacy, I really enjoy reading your blog and these have been some of my favorites this year as well. I am fairly new to DIY projects in general … We recently bought a house and are slowly repainting interior. I have done a couple furniture makeovers and I’m currently working on two dressers for my kids rooms. I noticed that you highly recommend the Home Rite paint sprayer. I’m wondering if it might be worth it for me to invest in that for furniture, the six panel interior doors that we have on each of our rooms and closets. I’ve also thought of refinishing the wood cabinets in the bathrooms and kitchen. Will the sprayer that you use and have recommended be good for these purposes? Do you feel that it is easy to use and easy to clean? Do you clean it in between each used or can you save it for the next coat paint?
