DIY Stucco Heart Wall Art
Let’s make some DIY wall art using homemade plaster paint! This is a fun piece of art to make for Valentine’s Day or any day, and it’s incredibly budget friendly.

When I saw this Stucco Textured Heart Wall Art, I thought it was such a neat concept. However, the art’s at a price I can’t afford and I thought I could create something inspired by the art with items I have on hand.
This blog post is part of a seasonal blog hop. Make sure to check out all of the other Valentine DIY ideas from my blogging friends linked at the bottom of this post!

How to make DIY wall art with textured plaster paint
Materials:
- wooden art canvas (I found mine at Dollarama, but here’s one on Amazon)
- plaster of Paris
- latex paint (I used white paint)
- water
- paint brushes, an old spoon, gloves

To begin, create a DIY plaster paint by combining one part latex paint with one part plaster of Paris. You want the paint to have a consistency similar to brownie batter!

Next, paint the base of the wooden canvas with the paint. I’m reusing a canvas from a previous craft, and the plaster paint covers the old art in one coat. Use lots of random brush strokes to create a stucco-like texture.

Once the base coat is dry, create another batch of plaster paint but make it much thicker. I used about 1 part latex paint to 2 parts Plaster of Paris. You’ll want the paint to be the consistency of cookie dough. Use a spoon to spread the paint onto your canvas in a heart shape made of two diagonal teardrop shapes.

Once you create a a heart shape that you like, you can add brush stroke textures with a flat or angled paint brush.

Finally, you can add details to the heart shape with your fingers if you wish. This plaster paint is very pliable and easy to work with for quite some time before it dries. Ensure your art is resting flat, and let it dry overnight.

I love the tone-on-tone look of this piece, and it’s a beautiful addition to Valentine’s Day decor, or for DIY wall art all year round!
