Shabby Chic Dropcloth Rag Christmas Wreath
This year, I have the privilege of decorating one of the homes in Edmonton’s Homes for the Holidays event. Five homes will be decorated by local designers and florists, and I’m one of them! The home I get to design is my dream home: a turn-of-the-century brick foursquare. I can’t wait to get my hands on it in a couple of weeks, but meanwhile I’ve been crafting away on some DIY Christmas creations for the space. I’m turning the home into a romantic and magical shabby chic wonderland, so this fluffy dropcloth rag wreath will fit right in! The nice thing about this wreath was that it didn’t cost me much to make at all. I already had a stash of painter’s dropcloth and ribbon on hand, so all I purchased for this wreath was the form, some faux greens and some glass ornaments.
I found these little glass ornaments at Michael’s, but real vintage ornaments would look so lovely in this wreath too!
Here’s what you need to make this shabby chic Christmas dropcloth rag wreath:
- wire wreath form (I used a 12″ form)
- a painter’s drop cloth (I used about a quarter of a large 9 x 12′ cloth) – wash it to soften it
- faux greens (I used sparkly faux cedar branches)
- wide wired ribbon
- thin satin ribbon
- small glass ornaments
- scissors
- glue gun
To begin, start ripping your drop cloth into 1 1/2″ wide strips. I measured the width, cut a small slit with scissors, and then teared the fabric the rest of the way. Pull off any loose strings. This creates a lovely, rustic fringed edge on your drop cloth pieces.
Next, cut your strips into 9″ lengths. I think I used about 200 1 1/2″ x 9″ pieces of drop cloth for my 12″ wreath.
Tie the strips around all 4 rings of your wire wreath form as pictured above. To do this, I folded a strip of fabric in half, placed it under a wire ring, and then brought the free ends of the strip through the loop of the strip on the other side. Place the knotted strips quite close together to created a nice, full wreath.
Next, arrange your faux greenery onto the bottom of your wreath as you like it. Glue it in place with a glue gun.
Create a big, fluffy bow out of the wired ribbon. Here’s how I make mine. Cut a piece of thin ribbon that’s about 10″ long, fold it in half, and safety pin it to the center of your wired bow as shown above.
Tie some glass ornaments onto the bottom of the thin ribbon, and then glue the bow in place on your wreath with a glue gun.
